June 29, 2010 Gainesville Sports Commmission Executive Director, Jack Hughes, Named to Florida Sports Foundation Board of Directors TALLAHASSEE - Joining the Florida Sports Foundation Board of Directors as its Sports Commission representative is Jack Hughes, of the Gainesville Sports Commission. Hughes attended his first FSF Board of Directors meeting in Orlando on June 18 and will serve a two-year term through 2012. As the sports commission representative on the FSF Board, Hughes will serve the interests of Florida’s 21 sports commissions. Hughes is now in his 14th year as the Executive Director of the Gainesville Sports Commission. He was the executive director of the Gainesville/Hall County, Ga. Sports Council for three years prior to his current position. “I’m pleased to be chosen to serve on the Florida Sports Foundation Board of Directors,” said Hughes. “The Gainesville Sports Commission has long been an active partner with the FSF since 1998 and supporter of programs like the Florida Senior Games and Florida’s Sunshine State Games. I look forward to representing our state’s sports commissions and playing a role forwarding the Foundation’s mission in this time of many opportunities.” Qualified by the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) as a Certified Sports Event Executive, Hughes served as the 2008-2009 Chair of this sports association and now serves on the NASC Leadership Council and both the professional development and member mentoring committees. Hughes recently worked alongside the Florida Sports Charitable Foundation presenting the Sunshine State Games Summer Games Festival in Alachua County. Over 2,300 amateur athletes competed in 11 sports over three days in Alachua County, June 11-13. Alachua County also hosted over 80 youth basketball teams at the Sunshine State Games Championships in May. Gainesville hosts one of 17 Local Senior Games events sanctioned by the Florida Sports Charitable Foundation as a qualifier for the Florida Senior Games State Championships. The 2010 Gainesville Senior Games will be held October 22-24, with athletes age 50 and over competing in 13 sports. The Gainesville Sports Commission hosts or helps others host more than 35 events annually. Also announced at the FSF June Board of Directors Meeting was a new Executive Committee. Taking the lead role for the Foundation, as Chair, is Thomas Wasdin, of Cocoa Beach, while Dr. Joanne Fava, of Venice, is the new Vice-Chair. Rounding out the officers of the FSF for the next two years are Secretary Jeffrey M. Adams, of St. Petersburg and Treasurer Dave Almstead, of Orlando. The new At-Large member is Rick Nafe, of the Tampa Bay Rays, who serves for Principal Owner Stuart L. Sternberg. Overseen by the Governor's Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic Development, the Florida Sports Foundation was founded in 1992 as the state's lead organization in promoting and developing both amateur and professional sports. The Foundation's goal is to develop and promote professional, amateur, and recreational sports and physical fitness opportunities that produce a thriving Florida sports industry and environment.
